We need transparency in our government if we are to act responsibly as citizens. Thanks to the in-depth work of the Constitution Project’s Task Force on Detainee Treatment, a new report informs us that our government engaged in torture — and there is no evidence that it resulted in reliable intelligence.

The task force reviewed hundreds of pages of publicly available documents and interviewed eye witnesses. U.S. officials authorized — and their representatives then used — interrogation techniques on detainees that our country had earlier condemned as illegal when used by others. Torture is immoral, harming the tortured and the torturer alike...
