Twenty-four years after its opening on January 11, 2002, the Guantanamo Bay Military Detention Center remains a symbol of our nation's use of torture. When President Biden left office, 15 men remained imprisoned in the facility that was established to detain individuals accused of connections to the September 11, 2001 attacks. Six of the remaining 15 men have never been charged with any crime, including three who have already been cleared for transfer.
In FY 2022, the detention center cost $275.7 million to run, including associated DoD legal services expenes. The detention center is both immoral and counterproductive to our national interests.
