Guantánamo Bay is a symbol of our nation’s use of torture. As of January 2026, 15 men are imprisoned at the detention center at Guantánamo Bay, including three who are cleared for transfer from the prison. It costs an estimated $13 million dollars per detainee per year to maintain the prison.
January 11, 2026 marked the 24th anniversary of the opening of the Guantánamo Bay prison. It is long past time for our government to close this symbol of torture and end the use of indefinite detent

Support the Guantánamo Survivors Funds
Make a donation to the Guantánamo Survivors Fund, organized by several organizations including Witness Against Torture and No More Guantánamos. Since the fund’s launch in 2022, more than 40 grants have been made to help men formerly held at Guantánamo and their families with housing, health care, transportation, and more.
Write a Letter to the Editor:

Host an Educational Event:
Whether in person or online, you can host an educational event to help your community learn more about why it is important to finally close the prison at Guantánamo. Here are a few ideas:
- Host a discussion of the film The Mauritanian - view the Discussion Guide and more information about the movie.
- Use the video "The Case Against Torture" - download the Discussion Guide.
- Passout or link to NRCAT's Guantanamo Fact Sheet.
Host a Vigil or Include in a Worship Service:
You might lead a brief prayer vigil on Facebook Live or host an interfaith in-person vigil in your community. Use NRCAT’s bulletin insert or litany during a worship service or vigil. Use NRCAT's Close Guantánamo Sermon Talking Points for a sermon or remarks during an event. You might sistribute orange ribbon pins to wear in solidarity with those in Guantánamo.
