Former pastor John C. Maxwell of San Diego once said, “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.”

This pithy and intelligent saying holds true for both nation-states as well as individuals. A nation’s soul can grow, but it can also stagnate and regress. Regression is especially possible when a more mature nation engages with a less developed one. Rather than lifting the less mature nation to its level, the more developed nation can easily mirror its antagonist, descending to levels of injustice and inhumanity it would have considered abhorrent — even to the level of torture...
