Torture is perhaps the most troubling issue of our time and is most often kept in deep shadow. The topic is painful to even think about and quite difficult to discuss, but we know that over 138 countries currently practice torture openly or by proxy.
The program was written by Scott Wright and represents the work of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture (NRCAT), Pax Chrisi, USA, the Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition (TASSC), and JustFaith Ministries (well-respected for its transformational, small-group programs in areas of social justice.) The program includes eight 2 ½ hour sessions.
While the program does not flinch from the realities of this very challenging subject, it is very much about healing and reconciliation and about the hope for eliminating torture in our world! The primary methodologies used are small and large group discussions and prayer and reflection. Facilitators and participants are not expected to be experts in the politics of torture and should take comfort in the clarity of Christian teaching that torture is never justified. While the module focuses quite heavily on Catholic social teaching, it encourages all Christians and people of good will to offer a response based on human dignity and the teachings of our Judeo-Christian traditions
Registration for the program is through JustFaith Ministries. Costs include $15.00 per person for a book and per group costs of $150 for registration and $85 for DVDs. Click here to learn more about the program and to download a flyer and registration form.
