WHAT IS THE NRCAT NATIONAL NETWORK OF SOLITARY SURVIVORS?
The NRCAT National Network of Solitary Survivors is a landing point and community for survivors of solitary confinement in U.S. prisons and jails that is providing peer support and collegiality to people who have faced isolated confinement first-hand. It is a network dedicated to being a safe place for individuals and family members to share challenges and hopes. Members of the National Network are advancing efforts to educate the public on the collateral consequences of incarceration on families and in doing so, working to shift our communities away from a punishment paradigm and toward one of restoration and healing. Survivors are supported in leveraging the wisdom of their past experiences to catalyze change, empower their own communities and families, and establish a sense of stability, hope for the future, and purpose post their incarceration.

WHY JOIN THE NRCAT NATIONAL NETWORK OF SOLITARY SURVIVORS?
Members of the NRCAT National Network of Solitary Survivors are surrounded by a community of support that fosters a sense of stability, hope for the future, and purpose following incarceration. Each member will receive training and ongoing support in the areas of:

  • Leadership through Organizing and Advancing Legislation
  • Leadership through Public Education
  • Mentorship

Leadership through Organizing and Advancing Legislation: Members of the National Network of Solitary Survivors receive organizing and advocacy training to assume leadership roles in the 19 state campaigns where NRCAT and its partners in the Unlock the Box Campaign are advancing legislation to end solitary confinement. All of the state campaigns are benefitting from directly impacted leadership. NRCAT conducts leadership development through trainings, connecting Network members with ongoing or new state-level campaigns, and supporting members’ participation in those campaigns.

Leadership through Public Education: Network members serve as subject matter experts for colleges and universities, faith communities, local, regional, and national conferences, and beyond. Speaking opportunities range from regular guest lectures to leading or moderating panel discussions to leading a workshop. NRCAT works with event organizers to identify Network members best poised to add their critical insight given the specifics of the event. Opportunities are both in-person and online.

NRCAT is proud to have played a critical role with several colleges and universities that have pledged to rebalance the positions of their institutions to advance racial equity by incorporating the lived experiences of subject matter experts on U.S. prisons and jails. NRCAT is in conversation with them to allow meaningful opportunities for Network members to add their expertise, perspective, and life journey to new and existing educational curriculums.

Mentorship: To support Network participants, NRCAT both identifies potential mentors and mentees within the Network, incentivizes routine engagement/meetings, and supports potential challenges that Network participants may be facing. We recognize the value and importance of mentorship upon reentry, but also for those who choose to enter the advocacy space. Due to the traumatic nature of solitary confinement, NRCAT values the emotional health of Network participants, by ensuring that the values of the National Network of Survivors of Survivors are grounded in principles of healing, restorative justice, and the intentional integration self-care after incarceration.
