National Religious Campaign Against Torture statement on the delay of the release of the Special Task Force recommendations on Interrogation and Transfer Policies

“Given the complexity of the topics the Task Force has been assigned, the two month extension is a reasonable request. It is essential that the Task Force gets this right.
The fallout from the U.S. government’s use of interrogation techniques that the world regards as torture has been universally damaging. Most Americans recoil at the idea that we as a nation would use torture, even in a time of war. Acting in panic and haste, our previous leaders did grave harm to our nation’s standing in the world. Better for the Task Force to take additional time to get it right, than to risk getting it wrong again.”

Rev. Richard Killmer, Executive Director
Killmer, a Presbyterian minister, is the Executive Director of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture – an interfaith organization of over 250 religious organizations committed to ending U.S.-sponsored torture. He was appointed to that position in May 2007. He is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and has two degrees from Princeton Theological Seminary. He has also served as a Visiting Fellow at Princeton Theological Seminary from 1985-1988. Mr. Killmer has written many articles and resources for publication and co-authored two books.
Linda Gustitus, President of the Board of Directors
Gustitus is the past board chair of the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation and lives in Washington, DC. She is the founder of the Washington Region Religious Campaign Against Torture and is an attorney.
