Stand Against Anti-Muslim Bigotry
NRCAT is working hard to address anti-Muslim rhetoric, and to do so we need voices throughout the country that can have an impact within local communities. When anti-Muslim sentiment is in the news, it is a good opportunity to respond with a letter to the editor. We’ve prepared some talking points that you can use and personalize.
TALKING POINTS:
- People of all faiths should work together to end terrorism – this is not the responsibility of just one community.
- By working with people of different faiths, we learn tolerance, compassion and acceptance.
- Muslims and non-Muslims can foster relationships that promote American values such as religious freedom and respect.
- My faith calls me to… {love your neighbor, welcome the stranger, etc.}
- By nourishing relationships, unity can be upheld while facing acts of evil.
- When we overcome mistrust and hatred, the relationships formed help to foster a more peaceful and nonviolent world.
- No particular group of Americans should be singled out because of their faith.
- Shameful acts against a targeted group because of their religious beliefs dishonors humankind.
- Stigmatizing the millions of law-abiding Muslim Americans as responsible for terrorism is discriminatory and unproductive.
- Promoting fear and suspicion of a particular religious community runs contrary to American values.
- Blaming terrorism on an entire faith isolates Muslim Americans and helps to justify persecution of them. One of the results of this viewpoint was the acceptance of the use of torture.
- We need to stand shoulder-to-shoulder and denounce these heinous acts.
