2010 Ecumenical Advocacy Days

Workshop Description:
The workshop started with three speakers addressing three areas of work to end torture at home and abroad: 1) Ending U.S.-sponsored torture of post-9/11 detainees; 2) Ending torture in U.S. prisons; and 3) Advocating for U.S. policies and practices that help end torture by other governments.

Panelists included:

  • Linda Gustitus, NRCAT's President  (starts at minute 6:05);
  • Lance Tapley, investigative journalist, who has covered the recent campaign to pass legislation limiting the use of solitary confinement in Maine (starts at minute 13:13); and
  • Stephen Rickard, Executive Director of the Open Society Policy Center, who has many years of experience working for an end to torture around the world (starts at minute 27:52).

The session included concrete suggestions for how people of faith can work to end torture in 2010, and Q/A with the panelists.
