CLOSE GUANTANAMO

Guantanamo Bay is a symbol of our nation’s use of torture.  Closing the detention center at Guantanamo is one of the steps needed to end U.S.-sponsored torture forever.

Use NRCAT’s interfaith prayer and bulletin insert during a worship service or special event to highlight the need to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay.

Please use the tools below to encourage your Members of Congress to work to close Guantanamo:

  • A sample email that can be sent to Members of Congress asking them to close Guantanamo. Urge your friends to send emails as well.
  • A petition on Guantanamo that you can use to gather signatures from members of your congregation, your family, and friends.  You can also use this petition to gather signatures from members of the public.  Good signature gathering spots include outside grocery stores, malls, and other public places.
  • A sample letter that you can provide to others to allow them to contact their Members of Congress about this issue. (Click here to look up contact information for your Members of Congress so that you can fill in the blanks on the sample letter before printing copies of it).

This issue is so important, and the prison at Guantanamo so symbolic of torture, that over 40 heads of faith groups, religious institutions and other senior religious leaders sent a letter to all Members of Congress encouraging them to do everything in their power to close Guantanamo.

In January 2010, op-eds by faith leaders, in response to the 8th anniversary of the U.S. government transporting its first prisoners from Afghanistan to the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, appeared in several newspapers across the country. With press coverage of the Guantanamo detention center and U.S.-sponsored torture, you can further the public conversation with a letter to the editor.
